When we think of traditions we usually think of those around the holidays. What about the ones we do throughout the year? We will share with you our Most Amazing Family Breakfast: A Weekly Family Tradition we enjoy all year long.
If you’re interested in checking out our holiday traditions to add to next year’s holiday season check out our Best Holiday Traditions: Family Guide and New Ideas. Anyways, back to the start of our family breakfast tradition.
After my husband returned from an overseas deployment a few years ago, the one thing that he missed most (besides us of course), was having our occasional family breakfast together.
On his one day off each week, during his deployment, he would sit down with a plate full of waffles, eggs and sausage. It was the one meal that would bring him a little joy, and remind him of home.
When he returned home after 8 months, we made a promise that every weekend that our schedules would allow, we would share a breakfast together. It has been a reminder of how grateful we are to have that time together as a family. Something that to be honest, we took for granted prior to his deployment.
Since then, we have shared many family breakfast’s together, and it is now something our kids look forward to every week.
The best part about this meal or any rather, is that you can truly make it what you want. We have our go to breakfast Items that we usually fall back on but every so often we like to switch it up, and let the kids choose the menu for our family breakfast.
Below we will share some of our favorite breakfast items that you can use to start your own breakfast tradition.
Waffles: The main staple for any breakfast, or so we believe. Some of our favorite brands are Krusteaz Belgian Waffle Mix or one of our new favorites is pancake/waffle mix from Partake Foods.
Partake gives people with dietary restrictions (like us), delicious foods with peace of mind by offering gluten free, non-GMO, Vegan and free of the top 9 allergens from their products.
Everyone has their favorite breakfast item, and maybe waffles are not yours. Maybe it’s that favorite pancake recipe that your mother always made, or a gooey French toast recipe. Whatever it is, pick something that is special to you. We feel it makes this meal together a little more magical.
Fruit: You can’t forget to add those delicious toppings to your waffle. Our favorite is a mix of fresh berries, (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries). And, of course some local sourced maple syrup.
Breakfast potatoes: Ok, carb overload, I know. Our breakfast potato recipe is to die for,(recipe to come soon). There is just something about a hearty, filling breakfast that just warms the soul. We always make extra to add to taco meat or make a breakfast bowl for days after.
Eggs: For our family breakfast we love a good bowl of scrambled eggs. But make them to your liking. My daughter prefers fried eggs. Lucky for her, on this day, I can’t say no.
Sausage/bacon: I’m not sure about you, but a couple sausage links or strips of bacon just add to the deliciousness of this meal.
We prefer turkey sausage or bacon from Jones Dairy Farm. They are a locally sourced farm with animal welfare in mind. Their products are also gluten free and do not add 9 major allergens to any of their foods (peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, wheat, soy, fish, shellfish and sesame).
There are so many ways to make this a special experience for everyone in the family. Let, your kids help plan the menu each week, have them help in the kitchen, or have a special table setting that you only bring out during the meal.
Maybe breakfast is not your thing, and you plan a family dinner each week instead. Whatever it is, the best part about it is the time spent together, and I’m positive it’s time your family won’t forget!
